The Giant Labyrinth of the Monts de Guéret

Giant permanent plant maze of Europe in the heart of the Monts de Guéret, central France. This is a maze of activity for any age. A set of games featured while you visit the maze, and even an Escape Room experience.

Milestones through the years…

1992 - the story began... It was the year of the labyrinth in Great Britain, a country which has preserved very old labyrinths. This did not go unnoticed by a Creuse resident who worked in tourism at the time.

1993 - the “JOB ESPOIR” association created by a group of Christians from Creuse, the aim of which - to encourage the creation of very small businesses capable of employing disadvantaged people.

1995 - Guéret Giant Labyrinth association created in September.

1996, Winter - the City of Guéret agreed to make 6 hectares of land available to the association for a period of 18 years, later extended to 25 years. In return, the association undertook to create the planned tourist facilities using its own means and to hire people in difficulty.

1996, Spring - the first work, leveling the 2.5 hectares necessary to create a first labyrinth started, financed by a bank overdraft.

1996, Fall - initial 11,000 plants purchased.

1997, Summer - the opening is delayed by one year due to the European subsidies reduced by 2/3.

1998, July 1 - Grand Opening!

2001 - the Labyrinth of Guéret measures 22,500 sq m, largest permanent plant labyrinth in the world.

2002 - 8,600 visitors.

2003 - 8,530 visitors.

2004 - 9,420 visitors.

2005 - 13,100 visitors. The 20-year anniversary of Guéret Giant Labyrinth association. A course of 12 skill games, probably unique in France, on half a hectare of wooded area.

2006 - 15,377 visitors. A pony riding activity.

2007 - 19,784 visitors. The skill games course increased from 12 to 18 games in order to reduce waiting times.

2008 - 19,005. The site’s 10-year anniversary.

2009 - 22,163 visitors. A giant water slide of around 50 meters and a sweets’ shop added.

2010 - 23,479 visitors. The 5th job position added to the team.

2011 - 25,613 visitors. A giant chessboard added.

2012 - 22,828 visitors. On Aug 14 the site welcomed its 200,000th visitor, a woman from Lyon.
 
2013 - 22,151 visitors. A treetop course introduced in Spring.

2014 - 23,218 visitors.

2015 - 23,389 visitors. The 20-year anniversary of Guéret Giant Labyrinth association. Purchase of a hedge trimmer on an articulated arm, development of the attic, creation of the barefoot course.

2016 - 24,100 visitors. The escape game introduced. The first cosplay-based “Japan Laby” event which would become recurring since then.

2017 - 36 industrially manufactured wooden benches installed. Two donkeys added to the mini-farm. Attendance at the escape game increased by 50%.

2018 - 20,836 visitors. The site’s 20-year anniversary. A small course of 9 skill games for the youngest (under 7 years old) added.

2019 - 19,654 visitors. A major heatwave during Summer.

2020 - Pandemic. 18,862 visitors.

2021 - 23,052 visitors.

2022 - 25,161 visitors.
