The Elgee Park Labyrinth

Opening on World Labyrinth Day, May 2nd 2015, the Elgee Park Labyrinth, created by artist Simon Normand, is dedicated to the Boonwurrung people of the Monrington Peninsula, and the men from the Peninsula who fought in World War I, 1914 – 1918.

Appreciation of sculpture has always involved an element of time: time to walk around the object, time for consideration. The Labyrinth extends this element; the act of walking the Labyrinth is not only an experience of space and time, it also provides an environment for quiet reflection and contemplation.

Granite from nearby Hillview Quarries in Dromana was used for the surrounding wall and seat that nestles into the hill. Bluestone cobbles define the path of the Labyrinth.

Within the Labyrinth, there are two beautifully detailed mosaics, made from Venetian glass. The Southern Cross sits at the entrance of the path, which winds its way to the central mosaic inlay, depicting Port Phillip Bay before the flood.

Surrounding the southern side of the Labyrinth, running east to west, are wattle mosaic panels that form seats. These were created by students from Red Hill Consolidated School.
