  • Brandýs nad Orlicí Labyrinth

Based on the fact John Amos Comenius, the world-renown Moravian philosopher, pedagogue and theologian, who is considered the father of modern education, resided in Brandýs in the years 1622 - 1625, this gracious labyrinth in the form of Globe is a dedication to its vast legacy. Started in 2002 and completed in 2009, the labyrinth nowadays welcomes visitors from all over the world.

The land on which the maze has stood since autumn 2002 belongs to the town of Brandýs nad Orlicí. The center of the maze is about fifty meters away from one of the arms of Tiché Orlice river and lies about a meter above its surface.

The maze lies on the axis of the monument and its floor plan is a square measuring 35 x 35 meters. Inside the square is a simplified azimuthally conceived drawing of the Globe, where the main meridians and parallels are subtly interrupted to complicate the path to the center of the labyrinth. In the center, i.e. at the finish line, an artistic object symbolizing the "paradise of the heart" is created. It is currently made up of spiral stone steps and will be supplemented with a central forged post.

All lines of the maze are made up of precisely geometrically planted hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) with a wall width of 0.8 meters and a height of 2 meters. All entrances and passages are almost one meter wide. The paths inside the labyrinth (outside the root space of the seedlings) are filled with fine stone gravel. The access road is paved on both sides with a garden border.

The maintenance of the labyrinth and the trimming of the walls is carried out by the members of the Brandýs in the World association with the help of the technical services of the city of Brandýs nad Orlicí.
