Man on the Run

by Serhiy Grabarchuk Jr

Solution Step 0/0

Jim ran 10 yards, then made a U-turn and ran 10 more yards. He then turned 180 degrees again and ran 10 more yards. Finally, he made a third U-turn and ran 10 more yards, after which he was 25 yards away from his starting point.

If Jim runs back to his starting point along the same route, what efforts will be needed from him compared to the initial run?

Explanations

Jim run up four flights of stairs. Each time he went up one flight, he then turned around and ran up the next one. After running up four flights, he found himself 25 yards above the starting point.

If Jim decides to go back, it will require significantly less efforts from him due to the descending nature of the run compared to the initial ascending one. This wil be also true in case Jim’s original run is downstairs, and then going back upstairs. In both cases the movement along the same route but in opposite direction is completely different due to its upstairs/downstairs nature.
