Church of Saint George, Lalibela

Monolithic rock-hewn Ethiopian Orthodox church, carved top-down from single volcanic rock in 12th–13th c. under King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela. Cross-shaped plan, set below ground level (approx. 12 m / 39 ft deep). Major pilgrimage site, symbol of medieval Ethiopian architecture.
