Built by the Portuguese (1593–1596) in Mombasa; guarded the Old Port against rivals. Massive coral stone walls , strategic design - Renaissance military architecture. Changed hands multiple times - Portuguese, Arab, British. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2011) and museum, preserving Swahili and colonial history.
