Voortrekker Monument
Massive granite structure in Pretoria. Built 1938–1949. Honors Afrikaner pioneers (Voortrekkers) of the 1830s Great Trek (discontent with British rule, moving NE from Cape Colony). Square base, 40m high. Surrounded by ox-wagon laager (circle). Interior features marble frieze, cenotaph. Site of national pride, historic symbolism.
