Boxes & Balls

Solution Step 0/0
Three identical boxes are placed on a table. One contains 2 black balls inside, the other one - one black and one white ball, while the 3rd one - 2 white ones. Also, there are respective labels on each box: “2 Black“, “2 White“, “Black and White“.

However, it is known none of those labels corresponds correctly to what is inside the respective box.

Just by taking out one random ball from one of the boxes (without looking inside), can you determine what balls each box contains? If yes, what box it would be?

Explanations

The strategy is to take out any ball from the box labeled “Black and White“.

A. If the removed ball is white, then the second must be white (since all labels are incorrect). As a result the box with the label “2 White“ contains 2 black balls, and the box with the label “2 Blacks“ - one black and one white ball.

B. If the removed ball is black, then the second one should also be black. Then in the box with the label “2 White“ there can be only black and white balls, and in the box with the label “2 Black“ - 2 white balls.
